PCM30/32 is a common frame format for the E1 base group. Each frame contains 32 timeslots, of which 30 timeslots carry voice or data services, timeslot TS0 is used for frame synchronization and alarms, and timeslot TS16 is used for channel-associated signaling. Voice signals are companded per ITU-T G.711 A-law and placed into the corresponding timeslot at 64Kbps, making the 64K timeslot the minimum unit for cross-connection scheduling. The IDM DXC5200 performs cross-connection at the 64K granularity: any service timeslot of an E1 can be cross-connected to a designated timeslot of another E1, and audio, V.35, and RS232 service timeslots are also incorporated into the same scheduling matrix. The matrix is non-blocking, so service adjustments are not hindered by internal resource conflicts.
